In the garden: Premium plants for Oklahoma

This fall is a great time to replace any plants you may have lost to severe cold the last two winters or heat and drought this past summer. Fall is also a great time of year in Oklahoma to plant some choice ornamentals in your yard to bring home autumn's magical display as well as for year-round attraction. Fall plantings are better for the plants and the gardener because the weather is cooler, and the rains are more consistent. Fall plantings also allow time for plants to establish strong root systems over the fall and winter. With stronger roots, plants will be better able to survive the unpredictable weather Oklahoma is famous for next spring.

Gardening: Growing gigantic Elephant Ears

Elephant ear plants (Colocasia esculenta is a widely grown species called taro) offer some of the boldest foliage you could ever want in a garden. Huge, heart-shaped leaves come in black, emerald green, chartreuse, yellow, or a combination of colors. The mammoth leaves can be more than three feet long on plants which can grow taller than six. Even their stems deliver impressive colors. New breeding of Alocasia, Colocasia, and Xanthosoma species has resulted in hybrids which offer a wealth of choices in colors and sizes. Some of the best new varieties are from the Royal Hawaiian series such as Hawaiian Punch, Blue Hawaii, Kona Coffee, White Lava, and the Pineapple Princess.
