Foundation to host community events to mark anniversary; $55M in grants have been awarded since 2012 The Avedis Foundation is celebrating its 10th anniversary by hosting several community events in October and November. Zoo to expand marine mammal habitat

As a leader in animal care and wellbeing, the Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden, is proud to announce plans for its next expansion project, a new marine mammal habitat. Construction will begin Spring 2023 on this premier animal habitat that will be home to the Zoo’s California sea lions, harbor seals and potentially other species.

Fall is officially here, and I’m loving the cooler rainier weather and all the beautiful foliage colors that are getting better daily. Fall is the best time to plant because roots will develop all winter and have a head start next spring.

My tomatoes are setting fruit again, but the bugs are beating me to them! Help?

So, our insects and wildlife know when our gardens are prime ready, even before we may realize it. Yes, they will race us to the produce, and sometimes win! With our current drought situation, the critters are looking for food and water too, maybe more so than in average years. If tomatoes have started to turn, we can harvest a few days early. Beating the insects to the food and ripen them on our kitchen counter. I have been doing this with my garden for a couple of weeks. It works really well, just don’t refrigerate them or the ripening stops. Here are some additional details on harvesting: As we enter the shorter and cooler days of late summer and fall tomatoes that survived the summer may begin setting fruit again. Hopefully they will ripen before freezing temperatures set in, but in case we have an early freeze that threatens the plants, tomatoes can be picked before they are fully ripe and stored indoors to complete the ripening process.

Education tax collections in October show increase

Through a 0.495-cent Pottawatomie County sales tax increase for schools, backed by voters in November of 2015 and set to continue until June 30, 2026, schools have been collecting funds for more than six years — now past the halfway mark of its goal. The tax increase was proposed to achieve two things: a 0.49-cent portion –– projected to raise $3.7 million in revenue annually –– is being split between the county’s 14 school districts, and the other portion of the tax — .005 cents — is being utilized for the construction, acquisition, maintenance, and operation of the One Safe Place Family Justice Center.
