Hort Q&A: What is going on with my trees?

Our office has been receiving many calls about tree problems. The roller coaster of weather events has been very hard on our local landscapes. Last Friday I went to four locations for site visits and three of them were for tree evaluation. There are a number of issues happening due to many different causes. The ice storm of 2020, followed by bitter cold the following February, wet springs with excess water, to dry summers and even drought this summer and fall. Our landscapes are definitely stressed. With stress from the environment, our plants then become more susceptible to insects and disease (that sounds much like humans). So, there is not one answer I can provide, but feel free to reach out to me with questions.

Autumn Sage and Artemisia add color to Fall landscape

Two of my favorite plants for the autumn landscape, Autumn Sage, Salvia Greggi, and Artemisia ‘Powis Castle,’ are shown in the picture of the sign bed in front of the Pottawatomie County OSU Extension Office at MacArthur and Acme Road. This picture was taken in a previous year when weather conditions were more favorable, but the bed looks pretty good this fall. Both of these plants are perennials and must have full sun to thrive, especially to bloom well. They need to be planted in soil that has low to average fertility and the soil must drain well.
