Legendary activist Opal Lee to lead round table discussion in Shawnee

Activist Opal Lee, known as the “national grandmother of Juneteenth,” is partnering with the Citizen Potawatomi Nation (CPN) and others to lead a discussion on faith, liberty and courage in the struggle for racial equality. Lee spent decades advocating for the recognition of Juneteenth and helped lead a 2.5-mile walk in honor of the 2.5 years it took for news of the Emancipation Proclamation to reach Texas.

Artwork by NRC students now on display at state Capitol

Teacher celebrates students and their artwork By Elisabeth Slay The Shawnee News-Star eslay@news-star.com Various art works by students at North Rock Creek High School are on display at the Oklahoma State Department of Education building at the State Capitol. According to NRC High School art teacher Bridget Moore, she wanted students to have the opportunity to display their artwork that had not been seen before.

August city sales tax, Use tax mixed

Shawnee’s city sales tax collection report for August has been released; revenue increased compared to last year, but sinks below last month’s data. Jacob Bussell, assistant finance director, reports sales tax and use tax collections totaled $2,491,768.60 for the month — about $68,832.72 below last month’s figures.
