This week is National Pollinator Week which is dedicated to promoting the health and protection of important pollinators like honeybees, butterflies and small birds. Oklahoma Gas and Electric Company (OG&E) has been doing its part to preserve pollinator habitats by designating portions of the company’s land as butterfly waystations – intentionally managed land that provides food and habitat for pollinator populations.

The New York Racing Association suspended trainer Bob Baffert for one year Thursday for repeated medication violations. A panel credited Baffert for time served from an initial suspension that makes the two-time Triple Crown-winner eligible to saddle horses in New York again Jan.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Friday stripped away the nation’s constitutional protections for abortion that had stood for nearly a half-century. The decision by the court’s conservative majority overturned the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling and is expected to lead to abortion bans in roughly half the states.

Through sponsorships the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art is offering free admission for the summer and various art programs for both students and adults. According to Director Dane Pollei, there haven’t been many physical changes to the museum, but there has been a lull due to the pandemic.
Shawnee’s city sales tax collection report for June has been released; revenue decreased slightly compared to last year. Jacob Bussell, assistant finance director, reports sales tax and use tax collections totaled $2,553,538.04 for the month — about $60,378.75 below last month’s figures.
Shawnee’s downtown area has become home to several murals, especially on the sides of buildings along Main Street. But not all of the large-scale paintings reside there. In fact, at perhaps what would seem an obvious choice -- a decorative piece is now in the process of being completed on the 2300 block of North Kickapoo. Several artists have been hard at work this week painting the north side of one of the art department buildings on OBU campus.
