Five business lessons my father taught me

Several years ago, I spoke at my father’s funeral and I could not hold back the tears. God had given me a great mentor to guide me through manhood. God was now taking him back. My father had achieved so much in his life, despite his lack of formal education. He had set a standard for me. He was my measuring stick. I felt my father’s shoes were too large to fill. However, I could not hide from my responsibilities. It was my turn. Would I falter under the pressure? Passing the family’s collective experience on to the next generation is a necessary part of building strong leadership within families. How can families preserve this rich knowledge base? Who is going to remind us of the old ways?

The 16th annual Tulsa Tough took place this last weekend. Three glorious fun-filled days of bicycle competitions (said with facetiousness). The annual hot, humid miserable weather arrived like clockwork. The intense rivalry between skilled riders and battles to become top finishers and share in the large purse are all reasons this is called Tulsa Tough.

Ward 5 candidate shares views solo

At a forum Monday at City Hall, Shawnee City Commission ward candidates participated in a Q&A with opponents as residents learned more about where they stand on local issues. Four posts are up for election on the Shawnee City Commission: The four-year positions of Wards 1, 5 and 6 are wrapping up the first terms for Daniel Matthews and Mark Sehorn, and a second term for Ben Salter, respectively.

No elections needed for Tecumseh seats

There will be no municipal elections for Tecumseh as three total candidates filed for offices throughout the week and all incumbents will retain their current seats on the city council. According to Patricia Carter, secretary of the Pottawatomie County Election Board, there were no other candidate filings on Wednesday, which was the final day of the three-day filing period.
