How to treat a tick bite and when to see a doctor

It’s the season of ticks, and while most Oklahomans know how to ward off the creepy crawlers, tick bites are a common occurrence that can cause serious health implications. Justin Talley, Oklahoma State University Extension livestock entomologist and head of the OSU Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology, said the reproductive cycle of ticks becomes more prolific when temperatures and humidity levels rise.

How does your garden grow?

“Mary, Mary, quite contrary, how does your garden grow?” Something my mother would say then laugh as she looked at my father working in his garden filled with dozens of tomato plants and other veggies. Although the oldest version of ‘Mary’ was published in 1744, practically everything about this nursery rhyme is in dispute. Was Mary the mother of Jesus, Mary Tudor, or Mary Queen of Scots? Were those pretty maids all in a row Mary Queen of Scots’ ladies in waiting (who were all also named Mary) or Catholic nuns? Won’t even touch the cockle shells. Let’s just enjoy the garden poem at face value.

Oklahoma Arts Council announces return of State Capitol artwork

After nearly six years in storage, more than 500 works of art are finally returning to the Oklahoma State Capitol. They are being joined by almost 20 newly commissioned monumental and life-sized works. The reinstallation of the artwork, representing five separate art collections, began Monday, June 6. It will unfold in phases through the end of the calendar year.

City rescinds museum eviction from depot

Shawnee’s Santa Fe Depot may yet house local museum displays, if all continues to go well on a path that took a turn this week. Shawnee City Manager Andrea Weckmueller-Behringer rescinded a recent notice to terminate the city’s longtime lease agreement with the Pottawatomie County Historical Society (PCHS) to operate a museum out of the Santa Fe Depot.
