Springtime is a great time for landscaping

Last week it was almost too hot and windy to work outside without following the shade, and then Mother Nature threw in some storms and hail to liven things up since it is Oklahoma. This week it’s so cold, wet, and windy that we want to sit in front of the fireplace with a cup of hot tea and look at the new weeds the rains brought. While we have plenty of at-home time since it’s finally raining, it’s a good time to think about our landscapes and do some planning for when we can get outside. This year may be the opportunity to work on making our yards and our landscapes a more welcoming, beautiful place to enjoy and appreciate nature. If you are landscaping a new home or adding to and renovating older plantings, here are a few points to consider.

Commit to Quit on World No Tobacco Day for a healthier Oklahoma

Tuesday, May 31 is World No Tobacco Day, a global event that educates on the harmful impact of tobacco, which kills more than 8 million people each year. This year, Tobacco Stops With Me, a program of the Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust (TSET), and the TSET Healthy Living Program of Pottawatomie County encourage Oklahomans to focus on the damaging environmental impact of the tobacco industry, which pollutes the planet and harms the health of Oklahomans.

Oklahoma Historical Society to host Juneteenth celebration June 16

OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma Historical Society (OHS) will celebrate Juneteenth with “Music through the Ages” on Thursday, June 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Oklahoma History Center. Oklahoma Sen. George E. Young Sr. of Oklahoma City will give a keynote speech, and Dr. Donnie Nero will serve as the emcee for several musical performances and educational presentations representing Oklahoma’s unique African American roots. Light refreshments will be served. The event is free and open to the public. The Oklahoma History Center is located at 800 Nazih Zuhdi Drive in Oklahoma City.

Conniving boyfriend sabotages longtime friendship with lies

DEAR ABBY: I have a gay friend I’ll call “Allen.” We have been close friends for 13 years. Allen has visited me often with his friends from England, and two years ago, when I could finally afford to visit him, he invited me to stay in the home he shares with his boyfriend, “Rupert.” Rupert took an instant dislike to me. OBU education majors host STEM Day for fourth graders

Teacher education students at Oklahoma Baptist University hosted a special day of learning recently for local elementary students. The event was themed “Science and the Olympics: A STEM Study” and was attended by 58 fourth-grade students from Grove Elementary School in Shawnee. STEM is a common acronym representing the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
