Legislature sends bills strengthening Oklahoma education to Governor

OKLAHOMA CITY – The House has passed several education bills that ban cell phones in schools, restrict virtual days, expand math supports for students, give students with disabilities access to schools that best fit their needs, and address teacher pay and retention, among others. Many of the bills now go to the governor for final consideration.

March Students of the Month named

[EDITOR'S NOTE: Two students are being honored for each month from September to April of the 2024-25 school year, named as nominees for the Best of Tri-County Area Preps Student of the Year award, which will be announced at the News-Star's Preps gala on June 3.] Rachelle Canaga and Austin Dong have been named The Shawnee News-Star and CPN Students of the Month for March and are now finalists for the Student of the Year award. Canaga is a senior at Shawnee High School and Dong is a senior at North Rock Creek High School.

Mayor declares April 13-19 National Public Safety Telecommunications Week and National Animal Control Officer Appreciation Week

During the April Shawnee City Commission meeting, Mayor Eric Stephens proclaimed April 13-19 to be National Public Safety Telecommunications Week. He also declared that same week to be National Animal Control Officer Appreciation Week.
