There continues to be many projects underway in Shawnee; residents are on the watch for some new additions to the city’s offerings. In Domino Plaza, along Harrison near Interstate 40, a new strip mall is being built; so far the site is set to house an Old School Bagel, and Orthodontic Specialists of Oklahoma. Next door a sign indicates the addition of a Taco Casa.
STILLWATER, Okla. – Rainwater catchment in the landscape is a great way to help conserve natural resources. There are various ways to capture rainwater, including the traditional rain barrel or installing a rain garden. Qing Luo, Oklahoma State University associate professor and OSU Extension landscape architecture specialist, said a rain barrel can help reduce storm water runoff by collecting the rainwater from the roof via the home’s downspout and storing it for later use.
OKLAHOMA CITY – Each year, as spring arrives, many people begin or continue raising backyard poultry flocks. These flocks have been gaining in popularity over the past several years and interest in them continues to grow.
Candidate filing for several area government seats has officially begun. With positions available in city, county and state offices, Wednesday -- the first day of the filing period – yielded several names to consider as the June election approaches.
Shawnee High School is hosting its “Once Upon A Prom” Saturday, April 23 at the SHS Performing Arts and Athletic Center. According to Shawnee educator Linsey Mastin Brown, students have been planning prom since October of 2021.

Ukraine says it damaged Russian flagship, crew evacuates KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian forces said they struck and seriously damaged the flagship of Russia’s Black Sea fleet, dealing a potentially major setback to Moscow’s forces as they try to regroup for a renewed offensive in eastern Ukraine after retreating from much of the north, including the capital. Russia said Thursday the entire crew of the Moskva, a warship that would typically have 500 sailors on board, was forced to evacuate after a fire overnight and also reported it was badly damaged.
Shawnee’s Animal Welfare officers were honored this week as part of National Animal Control Officer Appreciation Week, April 10-16. According to the Shawnee Police Department, Shawnee Animal Control is made up of three Officers who respond to calls 24/7, even if the Animal Shelter is closed.
