The News-Star’s new website launched on April 1. The e-edition paywall is currently down as part of the transition, but once it is re-established, current digital subscribers will need to sign in again and reset their passwords as the News-Star has transitioned from former owner Gannett to new owner CherryRoad Media. As a reminder, the former News-Star app didn’t move over and is no longer being updated. Digital readers should go directly to www.news-star.com and view the e-edition on the new digital viewer.

William Gordon, Master Gardener and groundskeeper at Oklahoma Baptist University, keeps a close eye on the campus. Over the past 18 months, he and his team have been dealing with a decline in many of the pine trees around the University’s Bison Hill home. With a few of the trees already lost and conventional methods and treatments not turning things around, they knew it was time to seek other treatment options.
Young poets throughout Shawnee are invited to submit pieces for the Live Loud Youth Poetry Contest, which is now accepting poem submissions from students in fourth through 12th grades. According to Brent Newsom, Division of Language and Literature Chair at Oklahoma Baptist University, poets are allowed to send one poem each to the contest.
ADA – After a two-year sabbatical, East Central University’s Evening of Honors and Recognition returns to recognize distinguished persons. The event is scheduled for May 6 in the Chickasaw Business and Conference Center. Registration begins at 6 p.m. with the event starting at 6:30 p.m.
A new spaghetti to-go restaurant is finalizing its efforts to open its eatery in Shawnee. The site for By The Bucket is just south of RibCrib on the 4400 block of North Kickapoo.
Several NRC Students attended the Interscholastic Meet at Seminole State College and competed against students across the region in various subjects. The following students placed in the following areas: Caden Edwards-3rd in Civics and 4th in American History; Ben Wiles-4th in Algebra; Conlan Chesser-3rd in Physics; Noah McMullan-4th in Civics, and David King-3rd in Oklahoma History.

As Jillian Sulley of Broken Arrow, Okla., began the drive back to college to take her final exams, she suddenly noticed the only thing she could see out of her left eye was a white haze. Terrified, she called her mom who instructed her to finish her final exams and that she would schedule an appointment with an eye doctor when she returned. When they went to the appointment, the doctor examined her eyes and then asked the family to meet him in his office.
