Ukraine seeks arms from NATO as fight looms on eastern front KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine told residents of its industrial heartland to leave while they still can and urged Western nations to send “weapons, weapons, weapons” Thursday after Russian forces withdrew from the shattered outskirts of Kyiv to regroup for an offensive in the country’s east. Russia’s six-week-old invasion failed to take Ukraine’s capital quickly and achieve what Western countries say was President Vladimir Putin’s initial aim to oust the Ukrainian government.

The Tom Elliff Center for Missions at Oklahoma Baptist University held its inaugural missions forum March 31 on the OBU campus in Shawnee. The Center launched in January and is designed to advance the gospel of Jesus Christ, enhance education in missions at OBU and empower missionaries by connecting local churches to OBU and the world. The center is named for Dr. Tom Elliff, former president of the International Mission Board.

Students of Shawnee are invited to submit items for the Live Loud! Youth Poetry Contest, which is now accepting submissions from students in grades four through 12. Poets are allowed to send one poem each to the competition.

Shawnee Emergency Management Director Rachelle Erickson is now in the Shawnee Police Department (SPD) Reserve program. Erickson graduated from the Meeker Police Department’s Reserve Academy Tuesday.

On Monday, Shawnee City Commissioners awarded a contract for the KidSpace Park improvement project. Figuring in several additional alternate bids, Lambert Construction, based in Stillwater, was the second lowest bid, Shawnee City Engineer Seth Barkhimer said.
