Keep America Beautiful calls for volunteers to replant trees in Pottawatomie County

Pottawatomie County – Keep America Beautiful®, in partnership with Keep Oklahoma Beautiful, Pottawatomie Go (Pogo), and United Way of Eastern Frontier Country, is seeking volunteers for the Pottawatomie County RETREET initiative on March 8. The effort will involve planting up to 200 large native trees to help restore the area’s beauty and resilience following the April 2023 tornado.

Update: Shawnee firefighters extinguish grass fire near apartments; conditions remain elevated

Days after a large grass fire impacted the wooded areas close to an apartment building between 45th Street and Interstate Parkway in Shawnee, grass fire conditions remain elevated. Over the weekend, the Shawnee Fire Department reported crews were battling multiple grass fires because of the elevated fire weather conditions.

Pott. County Sheriff's office investigates man's death in Friday grass fire

The Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Office on Friday reported an 84-year-old man was found dead in Bethel Acres after what began as a controlled burn turned into a wildfire. Pottawatomie County CID Captain Travis Palmer, who said the medical examiner will determine the man's cause of death, said this appears to be an accidental death.

ODOC graduates largest correctional officer class since academy overhaul

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma Department of Corrections proudly welcomes 54 new correctional officers – the largest graduating class since the agency revamped its training academy in May 2023. Since then, more than 380 officers have graduated from nine academies.The officers completed an intensive eight-week program designed to strengthen safety, security and rehabilitation efforts within ODOC facilities.
