SHAWNEE — Downtown Shawnee is opening its doors — even the empty ones — for a special Empty Buildings Tour this October.

Many residents will undoubtedly remember the growth pains of widening Kickapoo north to Interstate 40. After several years of respite, it is now time to finish the job.

The Shawnee City Commission recently considered a request to reduce the speed limit on North Kickapoo from Westech Road to Garrett’s Lake Road from 45 mph to 35 mph, as well as to establish four-way stop intersections at both North Kickapoo and Wolverine Road, and North Kickapoo and Garrett’s Lake Road. Assistant City Manager and Engineering Director Seth Barkhimer said that, due to a series of complaints, city staff had reviewed traffic conditions along the corridor and identified safety concerns related to both speed and intersection control.

The 2025 Pottawatomie County Free Fair is underway at the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center through Saturday, Sept. 6.
