‘Human beings too often lust for power’ Dear editor, The drummers of American suspicions march relentlessly across our various media venues, messaging a “Call” sometimes subliminally, sometimes blatantly, to ready ears: “To arms! To arms! The enemy is here!” And the “enemy” is? Well, it seems just about anyone who disagrees with the drummers’ choruses, any fellow citizen who abides by other “Calls,” not to arms, but “Calls” to think about how things “are,” not how the “drummers” declare they are. The enemy is any fellow citizen who abides by the “Call” to seek middle ground, to pursue the things which make for peace and build up the common life.
