It was a simpler time exactly one year ago when I first walked into the Shawnee News-Star as the new publisher.

Donald Trump as a Presidential candidate would have been a funny punchline, but now it is a reality.

People still assumed there would be a real candidate to take on Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primary.

Budget cuts to schools were simply due to bad policy decisions and not historically low oil and gas prices.

Like I said, times were simpler 365 days ago.

As a person who loves my comfort zone, spending the first third of the year sleeping in hotels, at my in-laws and in my old bedroom at mom’s house was rough on me. Driving back and forth to Kansas in what seemed like a constant threat of weather that would keep me from leaving or keep me from coming back wasn’t much fun either.

I did enjoy getting to move back in with my mom for a while. Of course, her cooking combined with all the meals out is a big reason my New Year’s Resolution is what it is this year.

I was finally able to get my family moved down here and start finding a new normal. I need normal.

In the year I have lived and worked in Shawnee, we saw drought give way to snow and floods, several tornado warnings and enough reports of earthquakes to keep everyone entertained.

There have been good days and bad days, good months and bad months and good news and bad news.

But even though the road was a little rocky, I couldn’t be happier to be here.

Something tells me the second year here is going to be even better than the first.
