Carol Sue (Parrish) Souders, 68, of Shawnee, passed away in her home surrounded by family on Nov. 20, 2016.

Carol was born in Shawnee on July 24, 1948, to Marion and Juliette Parrish. She was a graduate of Shawnee High School and a proud member of the Class of 1966, and greatly enjoyed planning and attending class reunions.

She married Garry Souders on Aug. 8, 1967, at Central Presbyterian Church in Shawnee and briefly lived in Norfolk, Virginia, returning to Shawnee after the completion of Garry’s service in the Navy. When she returned home, she attended Shawnee Beauty School.

Carol was a dedicated mother, grandmother and wife. She never met a stranger, and her favorite activity was spending time with her friends and family. She also enjoyed attending social functions, volunteering, delivering flowers, and adding to her ever-growing shoe collection. She was an avid reader and loved her mystery novels. She was a fan of OU and OSU football and never missed a chance to watch a Thunder game while drinking her amazing iced tea that only she knew how to make. You could frequently catch her listening to Bruno Mars or Barry Manilow and one of her favorite songs was Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.”

She loved growing flowers, tending her garden, and watching the birds she would feed in her pretty backyard, especially keeping the hummingbird feeder filled. She was a great cook and loved making amazing holiday meals for not just her family but her extended family as well. She loved spending time after dinner walking around their neighborhood with Garry and their dog Fluffy.

Carol happily spent her time supporting her community and her family, working at Tom Flora Photography, K-Mart, and House of Flowers and as a President of the Shawnee Band Parent’s Association and sewing flags for the Shawnee Colorguard. She was a devoted member of United Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday school and volunteered as a reading tutor in local elementary schools, which she was very proud of. She was one of the biggest fans of her town and was a strong part of what made up the fabric of Shawnee. She kept an enormous network of friends and it wasn’t hard to find a person that didn’t know her and loved her dearly.

Carol is survived by her husband, Garry Souders of Shawnee; son Garrson Souders and daughter-in-law Kristy Gilbert of Edmond; son Jeremy Souders and daughter-in-law Dora Lou of Macau; son Aaron Souders and daughter-in-law Rhonda Souders of Oklahoma City; son John Souders of Oklahoma City; and daughter Juliette Souders of Shawnee; grandchildren Kennedy Souders, Bristol Souders, Madeleine Souders, and Esmé Souders, numerous nieces and nephews, and very close friends. She is preceded in death by her parents Marion and Juliette Parrish; brothers Phil (Butch) and Jack Parrish; and sisters Russie Early, Margaret St. Clair, and Jean Knodle.

A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, Nov. 26, at 10 a.m., at the First Christian Church, 1625 N. Broadway, Shawnee, OK 74804 with a reception immediately following at the church.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Carol’s memory to the United Presbyterian Church, PO Box 995, Shawnee, OK, 74802.
