BETHEL - The Bethel Lady Wildcats led wire-to wire and defeated the Community Christian Lady Royals 41-34 in the season opener Tuesday.
With the Lady Wildcats leading 7-6 at the end of the first; they went on an 11-0 run in the second to end the first half with a 20-8 lead.
“We got off to a pretty good start. The first quarter not so much, but we did well in the second and third quarters,” Bethel coach Curt Knox said.
Bethel went on a 7-0 run capped off by a Harley Gregory field goal to end the third quarter. The Wildcats had a 29-12 lead going into the final frame.
Things got interesting in the fourth, as Community Christian outscored Bethel 22-12 in the quarter, but clutch free throws by Paige Delsigne and Kelsie Wood in the final minute sealed the deal.
“[Community Christian] hit some big shots and made a little bit of a run, but I was pleased that we made some free throws at the end. A win is a win,” Knox said.
This is the first win for the Lady Wildcats under Knox. He was pleased with his team's overall performance.
“I'm really proud of the way everyone played,” Knox said. “Experience is gained in situations like this, but there's a lot of basketball to be played. It's a marathon, not a sprint.”
Senior Paige Delsigne led Bethel in scoring with 21 points. Harley Gregory contributed six and Kirsten Winters five.
Community Christian was led by Shelby Thraikill with 13 points. Kari Obsfeldt joined her in double figures with 10.
Bethel (1-0) returns to action on Friday when they travel to Dale to face the Lady Pirates (4-0) in the I-40 Shootout. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
