Kermit “Monte” Byford passed from this life early Easter Sunday in Shawnee.

He was born on May 5, 1950, to Warren “Bill” and Pauline Harjo Byford.

He was called “Monte” by his family and friends. Monte was raised in Great Bend, Kansas and spent much time hunting, fishing and trapping in his youth. He was a certified wildland firefighter, commercial fisherman in Alaska and worked many years in the Kansas oil fields. Monte was quick to help anyone in need. He loved to surprise great nieces and nephews on special occasions. Monte enjoyed watching OU sports, thoroughbred horse races and was a life-long scholar and loved books.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, John Alford.

He is survived by two brothers, Flanders Byford of Choctaw and Ken Byford (Nancy) of Spokane Valley, Washington; one sister, Jerri Dawn “Susie” Jones of Tecumseh; many nieces and nephews and a special great nephew, Landon Campbell; special friends, Kristy and Justin; and beloved dog, Tippy.

There will be a celebration of life scheduled at a later date.
