Construction has started on the interior of the Pottawatomie County Museum.

The exterior walls are almost finished and the roof will be completed soon, Museum Director Ken Landry said.

“There is a lot more room than I had initially envisioned and interior rooms are starting to look like actual rooms,” Landry said.

The museum is being built on property to the north of the Santa Fe Depot along Minnesota Street between 9th and 10th Streets in Shawnee.

Once completed, the 12,572 square foot building will have a conference room, a full kitchen and a genealogy center. With addition room available at the new facility, the museum will be able to accept more donations.

To help build the museum, the late Paul Milburn, while serving as an executive committee member, offered a $500,000 grant for the society to match through donations.
