If you’ve been here before, HI again. If this is your first time checking out the Senior Center Happenings column, Welcome!! The Shawnee Senior Center is located at 401 North Bell Street. That’s right downtown on the east side of the Municipal Auditorium/Gym at the end of the Horseshoe circle behind the neat clock in the park.

Now if you’ve never been in there you are in for a big surprise as it is much bigger than you might think when looking from the parking area right in front. If you were one of the many that came to our big “One Day Sale” last Friday I know you will come to the same conclusion, it’s much bigger on the inside than it is on the outside. Kinda strange thing to say but everyone agrees.

Now on to the story for this week. Last Tuesday the Board of Directors were introduced to the work-in-progress that is the remaking of the Center’s website and hopefully the end of the idea that Senior Centers are for “old” people (maybe 85 to 90 or close). Brittany Miller is an accomplished young lady who has managed to acquire quite a background in restructuring websites, Facebook accounts and helping non-profit entities (which is what our Senior Center is) to acquire more funds enabling them to become more up-to-date and, have more security in areas like websites and Facebooks. She also showed us a more accurate and definitely more appealing picture of what our Senior Center could present with some good film production and professional expertise. She showed some of our Center’s people from 50 to 80+ having fun and enjoying things like dancing, singing and generally having a great time. All this in less than a 2 minute sample of how the idea of presenting the Center could change the public’s view of ours and perhaps other Senior Centers.

That sounds like a lot to swallow in a short time during the monthly Board meeting but she did it. The presentation was electrifying to all of us. She used her talents to present a picture of the Shawnee Senior Center complete with a new logo (beautiful use of the City’s new logo) but with a color swing that works wonders. There is still more work to be done but Kate and Val and Brittany are projecting that they will be ready to present all this and more to the public at the Country Western Dance scheduled for January 13th being held at the Municipal Auditorium/Gym. (We’ll have more info on the Dance as soon as I have more info on the Dance.)

I mentioned the garage sale (without a garage) earlier but Kate and her Krew wanted to make sure that I thanked everyone who came to make it such a great success. We got to meet lots of new people who joined others in telling us they didn’t realize how much room there was inside and, hopefully, some of you will stop in again to participate in some of our other activities.

Curious about what activities you might want to join; drop in and pick up a calendar. See for yourself the days and times for everything we have going on at the Center. Also on the reverse side of the calendar is the menu for the month and remember lunch is just $2. See--- two types of Center information with just one piece of paper to tape to your refrigerator.

Please remember to listen to “Mike in the Morning” on Wednesday, December 20th at 8:35 on KGFF (FM 100.9 or AM 1450) as he chats with members of our Staff about the “going’s on” at the Shawnee Senior Center.

And remember at the Shawnee Senior Center “Age is just a number” and our Facebook page is “Shawnee Senior Center” and our website is www.SHAWNEESENIORS.ORG. Come visit anytime.

See you at the center!
