Shawnee commuters can expect delays on Interstate 40 for a while.

I-40 40 East/West from the Interstate 240 merger to Peebly Road, or mile marker 169, will be under construction for the foreseeable future.

The project will widen the interstate to six lanes and in some areas will be eight lanes with merging ramps, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation said.

During the five-mile work zone, I-40 will be narrowed to one lane in each direction for extended periods of time.

The $75 million project will repair the interstate and six bridges. Duit Construction Co. out of Edmond was awarded the project Oct. 6.

Setup for the project began Jan. 6 and will continue through Jan. 13, with construction beginning soon after.

According to ODOT, 56,000 vehicles travel on I-40 between Shawnee and Oklahoma City daily.
