Studio 112 and a half in Shawnee, Oklahoma, is extremely pleased to be welcoming back Joel Carmichael as the featured artist in their February art show. “His art and his personality were a resounding success last year, says Studio Curator, Douglas Gordon.” I knew that we had to have him back in our gallery and ‘For The Love of Art’ is the perfect time to showcase his art and reintroduce him to the art world and local community.”
Each day, hundreds of people admire Carmichael’s mural, on the side of the Jujitsu studio at the corner of Main and Broadway in Shawnee, as they drive, or walk by it. His mural panels feature Koi ponds, peacocks and other Asian cultural symbols mixed with a little influence from the Italian opera composer Puccini.
Sharing the spotlight in ‘For The Love of Art’ with Joel will be two emerging artists from the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO); Sarah Ireland Thompson and Jackson Hopkins.
Sarah Ireland Thompson, age 18, is a current Art Education major at the University of Central Oklahoma. She has loved the creation of visual art since her first art lesson at 8 years old. Other than a few months of early art lessons, Sarah has learned and grown as an artist by self-teaching. Now that she is receiving an education as a fulltime art student, she is consistently pursuing her career as an art educator. This will be Sarah’s first time showing her art since 2009, and she will continue to work towards future showings.
Jackson Hopkins is a twenty year old artist who was born and raised in Shawnee Oklahoma. Art has always been a central theme in his life but only recently he has tried to show what he creates. Jackson attends the University of Central Oklahoma full time as an Art major and spends the rest of his time working and creating. This is the first time he has ever showcased his art.
The Show will kick off on Saturday, February 3rd with an Artist Reception between 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. The art will be on display and for sale until the 21st of February.
The Studio is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturdays and Sunday afternoons.
Studio 112 and a half is a working art studio and gallery dedicated to providing display and working space to both established and emerging artists in Oklahoma and beyond. “We encourage local and Oklahoma wide artists to come and enjoy this little bit of creative space and be inspired to create their own Art whilst they’re here,” said Douglas.
