Ben Salter, incumbent of Shawnee City Commission Ward 6, is announcing his candidacy for a full term in Ward 6. Salter was appointed to fill a vacancy in January 2017.

Salter enjoyed serving two terms on the Shawnee Planning Commission. He was chairman for one year.

Salter has lived in Shawnee for 66 years, and in Ward 6 for 45 years. He is married to Alice Lowe Salter and they have two grown children, Sara and Jon. He enjoys activities of his four granddaughters ages five to 13.

He was employed at the Shawnee Medical Center Hospital as Directory of Respiratory Therapy. He later became the first Marketing and Public Relations Director, also serving as volunteer leader. In 1987 he went to work for Express Employment Professionals as employee recruiter.

Though now retired, Salter has been active in Shawnee, serving as drive chairman, then president of Shawnee United Way, chairperson of membership service for Shawnee Chamber of Commerce. Salter served on several boards including Red Cross, Camp Fire Boys and Girls. He led a hospital Explorer Scout group and was a former Shawnee Rotarian. An Army veteran, he served in Vietnam. He is a member of the Central Church of Christ.

In seeking this office, it is Salter's desire to continue the forward pace of this community. He feels his background and love of this city will contribute to ongoing progress for all.
