On Tuesday, the annual Child Abuse Prevention Luncheon was held at the Shawnee Exposition Center. Each year the Pottawatomie and Lincoln County Child Welfare Collaborative and Support Task Force hosts this luncheon, where two foster families are recognized with the “Judge Glenn Dale Carter Child Advocate of the Year Award” for both Pottawatomie and Lincoln Counties. Graduating high school seniors in foster care received “Donald E. Wheeler Scholarship Awards” and certificates.
April is National Child Abuse Prevention month. About 22 to 30 percent of the children removed from Pottawatomie and Lincoln Counties may be placed in foster homes outside of the county, due to lack of foster home placements available in county.
As of June 2017 there were a total of 115 foster homes in Pottawatomie and 59 homes in Lincoln County.
