Among items on Monday's Board of Education agenda is the proposed creation of two new jobs within the district.

The Shawnee Public Schools (SPS) is recommending the board approve positions for an administrative intern and an instructional coordinator of special services.

In its recommendation, an administrative intern position would allow the district to groom leaders from within.

“It is critical to recruit good administrative leaders to the district,” the agenda reads. “Often, good leadership can be found and developed within our own certified staff. Establishing an administrative intern program will allow us to provide aspiring administrators within our own teaching staff who already have a commitment to our district an opportunity to gain valuable administrative experience.”

The intern would perform many supervisory and administrative level duties under the supervision of building principal.

The other position, Instructional Coordinator of Special Services, is needed in order to stay in compliance with all the regulations, policies and procedures related to students with special needs and to enhance the service the district provides to such students, the agenda reads.

“We anticipate the need to fill this position,” the memo states.

The job would require the performance of administrative level duties under the supervision of the director of special services and executive director of academic services.

“Incumbent in this position will assist with the identification of special needs children in the community; ensure Federal and State Special Education/Disability laws and regulations are fully implemented; and work collaboratively with sites to provide a free and public education in the least restrictive environment within the fiscal limitations of the district,” the memo reads.

The work year would be established by Superintendent Dr. April Grace, and the salary would be established by the Board of Education.

Watch for updates.

The meeting is 6 p.m. Monday at the Board of Education Administration Building, 326 N. Union.
