John Allen Townsend Sr., 84 of Shawnee, passed away on Saturday, July 28, 2018, in Norman.
John was born on Oct. 9, 1933, to Robert “Simp” Simpson and Ola (Greenlee) Townsend in Asher.
He was a Shawnee High School graduate in 1953 and attended San Diego Junior College in 1958. He received his Bachelor of Business degree in 1973 from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas.
John married Doris (Skeen) on March 7, 1953, in Okemah.
He attended Immanuel Baptist Church. John was a Master and 32nd Degree Mason in San Diego, California, and member of the Fort Worth Scottish Rite.
He was a member of Boy Scouts of America Troops 7 and 10 in Shawnee and earned his Eagle Scout award in 1948. He became Scout Master of Troop 104 in River Oaks from 1975 to 1981 and under his leadership he had 13 scouts earn their Eagle Scout award. He served as assistant Scout Master in 1982 through 1993 with Troop 104. He received the Silver Beaver award in February 1985 for over 30 years of service working with the Boy Scouts of America. This troop went camping once a month. Some of the scouts had never been out of Fort Worth and they loved to camp and canoe the Brazos River, which was a 50-mile trip.
He joined the Oklahoma National Guard at the age of 15. In 1950, this Shawnee unit, Company D, 180 Infantry, 45th Division was mobilized and sent to Japan to finish their training. He was sent on to Korea, serving from 1951 to May 1952, serving in combat for weeks at a time. He rarely discussed his time in Korea with his family.
John retired from General Dynamics, Lockheed Martin with 44 years of service.
He is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Bob Townsend, Bill Townsend, and infant Toy Townsend; five sisters Stachia Bumpas, Dovie Townsend, Winnie Rominger, Imilda Barbour and Wilma Michael.
John is survived by his wife, of 65 years, Doris Townsend; three daughters and sons-in-law, Liz and Barry Konecki of Divine, Texas; Ramah and Al Chansen of Lorton, Virginia; and Debbie and Don Anger of Kingston, Michigan; one son John A. Townsend Jr., of Aurora, Colorado; nine grandchildren, Angela Konecki and Ivan Jones; Rachel and Nick Bender; Andrew and Maria Konecki; Stephen Chansen; Chelsea Chansen; Don III and Kari Anger; Samantha and Nick McKenzie; WO1 Jack Townsend III; Jordan Townsend; eight great-grandchildren and many friends and extended family.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 1, and continue through service time. Family gathering to greet friends and family will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 1, at Cooper Funeral Home.
Services will be 10 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 2, at Cooper Funeral Home Chapel with Don Rominger officiating. Burial will follow at Vista Cemetery in Asher under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home of Tecumseh.
