Wednesday, a 2013 Hyundai Veloster was stolen from AutoMax in Shawnee and the suspect was later arrested after a pursuit ended on the OBU campus.
Shawnee Police Cpl. Vivian Lozano-Stafford said officers located the vehicle at Market and Federal streets and initiated a traffic stop.
The driver, later identified as Joshua McLaughlin, 26, refused to stop and continued driving, she said. Officers pursued the vehicle through several city streets when the vehicle became airborne and departed the roadway, grazing a cellar.
The vehicle made it back to the roadway after running over the stop sign at Ione and University. The pursuit continued through OBU’s parking lot until the vehicle hit a berm and stalled out. The suspect fled on foot into one of the buildings, where he was arrested.
McLaughlin was booked into jail on complaints of larceny of a motor vehicle, possession of stolen property, eluding while endangering others and assault on an officer with a dangerous weapon. Formal charges have not been filed. Watch for updates.
