At around 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Shawnee firefighters responded to a reported structure fire downtown at the northeast corner of 10th Street and Philadelphia.
Shawnee Fire Department (SFD) Incident Commander Capt. Travis Cooley said when crews from all three stations arrived on the scene the blaze was visible through a window, as well as a side door.
Firefighters began dousing the blaze from outside and later attempted to fight the flames inside.
Though the house was not an occupied residence, Cooley said the structure was stacked from floor to ceiling with stuff, so crews had to evacuate.
“It's too dangerous to have firefighters in there (with the building so heavily packed with items),” he said.
Cooley said his initial estimation was the fire likely caused about $10,000 in damages.
Crews attended the site for about an hour and a half.
“There were no injuries,” he said. “And no one was (found) inside.”
