Auditions for membership in Shawnee's community choir, the Sine Nomine Choral Society of Central Oklahoma, are scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 23, at 6:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, Tenth and Union.
“Sine Nomine has been a part of the Shawnee arts scene for 20 years,” said Herb Moring, the choir's director. “Membership is open by audition to anyone high school age or older who likes to sing and can commit to the choir's Monday evening rehearsals. We present two concerts a year, one in the fall and one in the spring.”
This fall's program will be a Christmas concert presented as a joint concert with the Shawnee High School choirs, directed by Justin Lee. Each choir will present six to seven songs, then they will combine for three choruses from “Messiah,” including the “Hallelujah Chorus.”
“Auditions for Sine Nomine are easy,” said Moring. “No preparation is necessary. The auditioner will sing a familiar song, do some simple pitch-matching exercises, and part-sing a simple hymn. It takes about 5 to 10 minutes. The ability to read music is helpful, but is not required.”
Persons interested in auditioning should meet Moring in the north parking lot (Tenth Street) at 6:30 and then go to the church's choir room, where the group's weekly rehearsals are held. In the event anyone would like to audition, but cannot make the Aug. 23 date, he or she may contact Moring at 388-2211 to set up another audition time.
