NEWCASTLE — Bethel’s Jordyn Zachary tossed a one-hitter Thursday but it wasn’t enough as McKenzie Wagoner of Newcastle hurled a no-hitter in a 1-0 triumph.
Zachary walked two batters and fanned three in six innings. Newcastle’s run was unearned in the bottom of the first inning.
Wagoner, who threw 66 pitches, struck out nine. Of her 66 pitches, 55 were strikes.
Bethel, 12-13, failed to draw a walk with its only baserunner coming on Newcastle’s one error.
Newcastle stranded only two runners.
Jordyn really did a great job of pitching and our defense had to make some good plays,” Bethel coach Chad Smith said. “It was a great game if you are a fan of pitching.”
Bethel will play Newcastle again Monday at 5 p.m.
