The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says a crash that occurred on Interstate 40 in Seminole County late Thursday night was caused by a suicide attempt.

Troopers said that crash occurred at mile marker 196, about 10 miles north of Seminole.

A 2015 Audi A3 driven by Michael A. Smith, 22, of Haughton, Louisiana, was eastbound on I-40, the patrol released. The driver “typed a suicide note on his cell phone and fired one round from a 9mm pistol into his head,” the trooper's report shows, causing the vehicle he was driving to depart the roadway into the center median and hit the cable barriers.

The crash is still under investigation, but the driver was transported by Medi Flight to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City, where the patrol listed him as as being in critical condition with a head injury.

The accident was investigated by Trooper David Storts of the Seminole County Detachment of Troop D and he was assisted by Trooper Tim Baker of Troop V, the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office, Medi Flight and Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.
