Lindsay Dennis, Shawnee High School English teacher, on Thursday received the 2018 INTEGRIS Jim Thorpe Rehabilitation Courage Award.
Dennis received her award during the Courage Award Luncheon, with Dr. Kristi Self making the presentation.
The award recognizes individuals who have overcome disabilities caused by injury or illness by facing the physical and mental challenges of rehabilitation with courage and determination.
After a serious car accident left her paralyzed, Dennis had to learn how to live life in a wheelchair. She had to adapt how she cared for herself, her husband and their two small children.
Initially, Dennis worried that she maynever be able to return to the classroom, but after months of both inpatient and outpatient therapy and lots of hard work, she was able to return to the job she passionately loves.
Dennis currently teaches English II and serves as yearbook advisor at SHS.
