MEEKER—The Meeker Bulldogs were looking to solidify a spot at the top of the Class 2A-District 2 standings on Friday night, but the Jones Longhorns took control instead, with a 28-6 win.
“They are a very good football club,” said Meeker head coach DJ Howell. “We are disappointed, but will go back to work tomorrow.”
The Longhorns took control of the game early, taking the opening drive 47 yards in 11 plays, 45 of which, came through the air. Korbin Cox finished the drive with a 3-yard run to give Jones a 6-0 lead with 8:48 left in the first quarter.
Meeker’s offense sputtered in the first half as Jones loaded the box and took away most of the Bulldog run game. The Longhorns forced three-and-outs on the Bulldogs first two possessions of the half and didn’t allow them a point in the half. Meeker had just 63 yards of offense in the first half.
That was the bad news. But Meeker’s defense, after the first drive was equally stiff. Although they were out-gained 150 yards to 63, Meeker didn’t allow any other points in the first half and trailed just 6-0 heading into the second frame.
Meeker opened the second half with a four-play 70-yard drive to tie the score at 6-6 with 9:49 left in the third. A big 27-yard run by Meeker’s Caden Wolford got the Bulldogs to the Jones 23 yard line and on the next play quarterback Jacob Martin squirted free for a 23-yard scoring beauty.
Jones didn’t take long to answer, 4:39 off the clock to be exact, as they drove 65 yards to re-take the lead. Tye Tucker scored on a 9-yard pass from Daniel Jackson and the Longhorn converted the 2-point ass to take a 14-6 lead with 5:05 left in the third.
The turnover bug then bit the Bulldogs. Martin was picked off on Meeker’s next two possessions and Jones took full advantage. The Longhorns scored on a 6-yard run by Cox and another on Jackson’s second touchdown pass of the game. This tie he hit Trey Dorrell from 19-yards out to end the scoring.
Jones finished the contest with 303 yards of total offense while holding Meeker to 237 yards.
Meeker falls to 4-1 on the season and are 1-1 in district play.
Meeker will travel to face Chandler next Friday night.
