In conjunction with the annual Thanksgiving Community Meal and Food Boxes served in through The Salvation Army's Social Services, events are being held across various parts of Pottawatomie, Lincoln and Seminole Counties to help Oklahomans in need by collecting canned foods and non-perishable items at many schools.

The canned food drive donations can be made Oct. 22 through Nov. 3 at local schools, or donations can be made directly to The Salvation Army.

Studies show that the cost of helping an individual from homelessness to stable housing is about $8,000 per person along with additional expenses in medical caused by being homeless. In contrast, the cost of helping those same individuals with food assistance and to keep them housed is considerably less.
