PRESTON — First-year Dale girls’ coach Eric Smith got off to a good start Friday night as his Lady Pirates bolted to an 84-45 victory over Preston in a 2018-19 season opener.
Dale led 37-26 at halftime and 58-36 after three quarters. Elaine Witt led the way with 24 points, including three 3-point field goals.
Also scoring in double figures for Dale were Lindy Nowakowski (12), Brenlee Sheppard (12) and Maddie DeGraffenreid (10).
DeGraffenreid also knocked down three treys.
Dale posted 13 3-point field goals.
Smith emptied his bench as 10 Lady Pirates got in the scoring column.
“We didn’t rebound and block out as well as we should have, but we played very aggressive in our full court. We shared the ball and got good production from our bench,” Smith said.
The Pirates never trailed in blitzing Preston 87-43 after leading 16-2 after one quarter and 50-18 by halftime.
Eleven Pirates scored, led by Logan Woodruff with 25 and Dillen Forsytthe with 12. Palmer Jones added 11 and Cedric Scott chipped in with 10.
Scott and Woodruff produced two 3-point field goals apiece.
Forsythe was 5 of 6 from the line, but Dale was just 12 of 23 overall.
Both Dale teams will entertain Latta Tuesday in their home openers.
