Sunday is Veterans Day, a time to pause and thank veterans for their service.

As you go about your day, whether that is going to church, the grocery store, out for a meal or maybe spending time with your family, please take a moment to remember why you have all of those freedoms.

Veterans Day is observed Nov. 11 each year to honor Veterans and members of our military. Because Veterans Day falls on a Sunday this year, Monday will be observed as the federal holiday.

As the community marks Veterans Day, there are events being planned to honor our flag and our veterans.

On Saturday, Nov. 10, an official American flag retirement ceremony will be held 10 a.m. at Woodland Veterans Park, with many participants showing the proper way to retire an American flag.

On Monday, a Veterans Day observance ceremony will begin 11 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial in Woodland Veterans Park in downtown Shawnee.

The park and memorial, made possible through many efforts along with the hard work and dedication of area veterans themselves, is a beautiful tribute to veterans in all branches of service.

If you’ve never been there, take the time to stop by, take a walk and reflect on all the names of those who make our freedom possible.

We owe them all a debt of gratitude.

And when you see a veteran, please don't miss the opportunity to say hello and “Thank you.”

They do appreciate it.
