A Shawnee man was arrested by the Canadian County Sheriff's Office after he allegedly preyed on who he thought was a 14-year-old girl, but it was actually an undercover deputy on social media, deputies said Friday.

On Nov. 6, the Canadian County Sheriff’s Office arrested Michael Gilbert, 68, of Shawnee, on a complaint of lewd acts with a child under 16, said Capt. Adam Flowers of the Canadian County Sheriff's Office.

Flowers said Gilbert approached an undercover deputy’s social media profile and began communicating with who he believed to be an underage female teen living in Canadian County.

“Gilbert was advised by the undercover deputy that he was talking to a 14-year-old female,” Flowers said, “but continued the conversation, which became sexual in nature.”

He said the investigation began Oct. 31, when Gilbert allegedly informed the undercover deputy that he had been with a 14-year-old female before.

After Gilbert asked the decoy several sexual history-type questions, he told her to erase the conversation to hide it so he wouldn’t get in trouble, Flowers said.

Knowing what he was doing was illegal, Flowers said Gilbert continued inquiring about the girl’s sex life and told her he wanted to do more with her, including sexual intercourse.

Once Gilbert was identified as the suspect, Flowers said deputies discovered he was a lifetime sexual offender for lewd or indecent proposals to a child.

“Because Gilbert possessed a history as a sexual predator, investigators worked to locate him,” Flowers said.

Flowers said Gilbert was found at his place of employment, a real-estate company in Shawnee.

It is reported that when investigators interviewed Gilbert, he admitted to talking to the decoy about sexual matters.

Flowers said Gilbert was taken into custody and transported from Shawnee to the Canadian County Detention Facility in El Reno, where he was booked into jail on complaints of lewd acts with a child under 16. Gilbert’s bond was set at $100,000. Flowers said he remains in custody but formal charges have not yet been filed.

The Canadian County Sheriff’s Office works its child predator program as Internet Crimes Against Children task force members with the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.

“I’m extremely pleased that my investigators were able to take Gilbert off the streets, where he is no longer a threat to our children, especially considering he is already a convicted sex offender,” Canadian County Sheriff Chris West said.
