Richard “Rick” Darrell Brewster, 65, of Shawnee, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 24, 2018, at 3:57 a.m., surrounded by his family.

He was born June 4, 1953, to Darrell and Pattie Jean “Ducky” (Ledbetter) Brewster in Detroit, Michigan. After Rick graduated from college, work took him to Oklahoma as he helped to open the General Motors assembly plant in Oklahoma City, where he gave nearly 40 years of faithful service. It was there that he met the love of his life, Velta Lea Woolery. They were wed on Nov. 16, 1979, and had two children. Together, they built a beautiful life on the family farm in Dale. Rick loved the farm and took great pride in transforming that 80-acre parcel of land into a little corner of paradise. Many family friends have fond memories of pulling into the Brewsters' driveway to be greeted by Rick in his whitey tighties, wandering around the yard watching his grass grow.

Rick was preceded in death by his mother and father.

He is survived by his wife, Velta Brewster of Shawnee, along with their two children, Geoffrey Brewster of Tulsa, and Rory (Katy) Brewster of Shawnee, and two grandchildren, Kayson Brewster and Reagan Ricquel Brewster of Shawnee. He is also survived by his two older sisters, Pamela “Pam” (Darby) Stewart of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Sandra “Sandi” McMasters of Sterling Heights, Michigan.

Rick had a deep belief that quality education lays a solid foundation for a successful life. To that end, he ensured that both of his children graduated with their master's degrees. While they were students at Dale Public Schools, Rick served on the Board of Education for 10 years, and his wife has been a kindergarten teacher at Dale Elementary School for 20 years. To honor Rick’s passion for education, his love of Dale, and his deep appreciation of the services offered to his grandson, Kayson, currently in pre-k at Dale, the family has established the Brewster Family Legacy Fund at the Tulsa Community Foundation to support educational programs for exceptional children at Dale Public Schools. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts be made in Rick’s memory to this fund: Tulsa Community Foundation, Attn: Brewster Family Legacy Fund, 7030 S. Yale, Suite 600, Tulsa, OK 74136.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 8, at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Shawnee.
