At Monday's Shawnee Board of Education meeting, the board took another step in securing a land purchase for construction of a new elementary school.

The board passed a motion to approve the “Exchange Agreement with the Commissioners of the Land Office and authorize the Superintendent to sign all documents and take necessary actions to close the Agreement,” SPS reports.

The motion is a continuation of the previous month’s action to direct the Shawnee Public School’s attorney to work on a contract with the Commissioners of the Land Office for the purchase of 15 acres of land on 45th Street, west of Kickapoo Avenue.

That's where the district plans to build a fifth elementary school for Shawnee as part of a $32 million bond issue that was passed by voters in 2016.

If the acquisition can be worked out, Shawnee’s new elementary school would be constructed on that land, with construction likely beginning in 2020.
