SHAWNEE – The Pirates had their hands full in the third-place game of the Bison Invitational Monday evening.
The Pirates led most of the way, but McLoud fought back to make things interesting late. Dale persevered and pulled off the 51-47 triumph.
“I knew it would be a tough game,” Coach Jeff Edmonson said. “We had a tough game Friday and have a tough week of games ahead of us. It’s easy to look at our upcoming games, but we have to be ready to play every night. We did a good job of hanging on and picking up the win.”
McLoud held a 13-12 lead at the end of the first quarter. Brandon Vinson scored six points in the quarter to lead the Redskins.
In the second quarter, freshman Johnny Sparlin knocked down a trey to give the Redskins a 16-12 advantage. Dale proceeded to go on a 12-0 run to take the lead.
McLoud answered back with a 6-0 run of their own to make it 24-23 lead in favor of the Pirates. Dale’s Dallen Forsythe added a basket right before halftime and the Pirates held a 26-23 lead at halftime.
The Pirates continued to extend their lead in the third quarter. They managed a 8-2 lead to start the second half. Dale led 43-38 after the third frame.
McLoud started the fourth quarter on fire. Tristain Cook and Brandon Hadl each made one basket apiece. Vinson knocked down a trey and McLoud took a 45-43 lead with 5:14 remaining in the game.
Dale’s Trae Thompson added two free-throws and Dale tied the game at 45-45.
The next trip up the floor, Hadl grabbed an offensive rebound and scored on a layup, giving McLoud their first lead since the first quarter.
Logan Woodruff knocked down a three-pointer and McLoud regained the lead 48-47. Dale made free-throws down the stretch to ice the game.
Dale will host Luther Tuesday.
