PIEDMONT – The Lady Wolves proved why they’re the fifth-ranked team in 6A.

After a scrappy affair, Shawnee pulled off a 46-32 victory over Class 5A No. 1 Piedmont Tuesday evening.

“We played a much better game in the second half,” Coach Wendi Wells said. “We need to focus on defending and communicating on every possession so there aren’t any breakdowns for open shots. We are still learning to manage the game offensively. Ultimately, we have to focus on the parts of the game we can control.”

The Lady Wolves trailed Piedmont 12-8 after the first quarter.

Shawnee picked up the intensity in the second quarter, outscoring Piedmont 9-6.

Shawnee struggled from long distance, making one of six in the first half. Despite their struggles from downtown, Shawnee trailed 18-17 at the break.

The Lady Wolves won the rebound battle in the first half 10-6.

Shawnee proved why they are a top-ranked team in 6A as they started the quarter on a 22-6 run and never looked back.

Lauren Fields led all scorers with 19 points. She also added five rebounds and three steals. Fields also connected on 7 of 9 free-throw attempts.

Makyra Tramble knocked down 3 treys on her way to a 13-point performance. Tramble chipped in seven rebounds and four assists.

Shawnee (5-0) will host No. 9 Ponca City on Friday.
