PRAGUE – A Chloe McClendon layup with 1:55 remaining tied the game at 30-30, but the Prague Lady Red Devils were unable to keep pace, losing 40-33 Thursday in the Prague Chamber Czech Holiday Classic.
Guthrie scored from the free-throw line early. Arianna Morgan scored four of the first six points from the charity stripe.
After the Lady Red Devils found themselves down 6-0 early, Jaycee Johnson knocked down a three-pointer. Those three points were the only offense Prague could muster in the first quarter.
At the end of the first quarter, Prague trailed 10-3.
The Lady Red Devils were a different team in the second quarter. They started the quarter on a 5-0 run and trailed 18-14 at the break.
Taylor Hodges led Prague with six points in the first half.
Guthrie played better in the third quarter, but a Hodges layup at the buzzer kept Prague in the game. After three quarter, the Lady Red Devils trailed 28-22. Hodges was the leading scorer in the quarter with four points.
After Johnson tied the game, Guthrie went on to shoot 10 free-throws. The Lady Jays converted 8 of 10 to ice the game.
Hodges led Prague with 14 points. Caya Wright joined her in double figures with 10. Johnson added five points.
Prague returns to action Friday with a 10 a.m. tipoff with Cleveland.
On the boy's side, Prague came out victorious 56-52 over Perkins-Tryon in round one action.
Prague fell behind 9-1 to start the game, but Isaac Bloomer led his team to within two at the end of the first quarter. The Red Devils trailed 12-10. Bloomer registered six points in the quarter.
The second quarter favored Prague. Bloomer again led the team in scoring with eight points and the Red Devils led 24-22 at halftime.
Perkins took a momentary lead early in the third quarter after Gannon McCutchen knocked down a three-pointer. Bloomer responded with a quick basket and with 3:50 remaining in the third frame, the game was tied 29-29.
Bloomer and Trip Davis knocked down one three-pointer apiece and helped the Red Devils take a 37-33 lead to end the third quarter.
Perkins started the fourth quarter 1 for 3 from the charity stripe and Prague went on a nine point run to take a 10-point lead with 4:40 remaining.
Prague's Colby Smith knocked down a trey and Perkins was forced to take a timeout.
Then things got interesting.
McCutchen went on a personal 10-point run, cutting the Red Devil's lead to 50-46.
Perkins-Tryon's coach received a technical and Bloomer knocked down both throws.
Prague went on to put the nail in the coffin with four more free throws.
Bloomer led all scorers with 27 points.
McCutchen had 22 points in the loss.
Prague will play the winner of Clinton and Noble in the semifinal round Friday at 5:30 p.m.
