Shawnee police are investigating a fatal crash that occurred Wednesday evening as wintry precipitation was beginning to fall in the area.
Shawnee Police Cpl. Vivian Lozano-Stafford said it was about 7:07 p.m. Jan. 2 when officers responded to the area of Benedict Street and Acme Road for that fatal crash.
She said a black 2004 Mercedes sedan driven by Norman Hanks, 82, Shawnee, was traveling westbound on Lake Road and went left of center, striking a tan 2006 Chevy pickup going eastbound on the Lake Road bridge. That Chevy was being driven by John Thompson, 37, Shawnee.
Lozano-Stafford said Norman Hanks was pronounced dead at the scene and his passenger was transported to OU Medical Center by REACT EMS.
The other driver and passenger were taken to SSM Health St. Anthony Hospital Shawnee by personal vehicle.
The accident is still under investigation, she said, but the weather conditions may have contributed to the accident.
Several other weather-related accidents were reported Wednesday evening as the storm came through, mostly on bridges.
