LATTA — Logan Woodruff knocked down four 3-point field goals and Dale played excellent defense Friday night in shellacking Latta 55-32.

Gabe Gouge was Dale’s scoring leader with 16, followed by Woodruff with 14 and Ike Shirey with nine. Shirey had two treys.

Up 25-20 at intermission, Dale broke it open with a 15-4 run in the third quarter.

“We played great defense, especially in the third quarter,” Dale coach Jeff Edmonson said. “It was a team effort on both ends of the court. We moved the ball better and it was the best defense we’ve played this season.”

Dale, 9-2 with buzzer-beating losses to ranked teams Christian Heritage and Elgin, went 6 of 9 from the line Friday night.

The top-ranked Pirates will play host to Preston Tuesday night, then compete in the Kingston Tournament Jan. 10-12. Dale will engage Tishomingo at 3 p.m. Thursday in a first-round game.

Latta avenged an earlier 17-point loss to Dale with a 53-51 triumph. It was Dale’s first setback of the season after registering 10 wins.

Dale missed a 2-point field-goal attempt right before the final buzzer.

Elaine Witt was Dale’s offensive ringleader with 17 points and Lacey Savage chipped in with 16.

Witt posted Dale’s only two 3-point field goals.

“We didn’t play very intense and Preston played well,” Dale coach Eric Smith said.

Dale will entertain Preston Tuesday, then take on Rock Creek Thursday at 1:40 at the Kingston Tournament.
