At Monday's Shawnee Board of Education meeting, members of the board were presented with a $30,000 grant check from Oklahoma Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust representatives.
The grant will be used for hydration stations in schools throughout the district as well as mind and body fitness training and equipment for both students and faculty. It will also be used for additional cafeteria seating at Will Rogers Elementary.
“These grants recognize the efforts of school districts and school sites that are actively promoting healthy lifestyles,” TSET Interim Director Julie Bisbee said. “Studies show that active, healthy kids perform better in school and we want to recognize schools that are making the healthy choice the easy choice for students, staff and the community.”
The purpose of TSET is to promote a healthy environment in schools through aspects such as physical activity, nutrition and tobacco and vape free campuses throughout the county.
The initiative includes the well-being of students, teachers and other staff.
In other business, the board approved two school calendars.
The Shawnee Board of Education approved the calendars for both the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 school years. Based on a survey, members approved schedules with variances in Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks.
Members convened in executive session for just over an hour to discuss certified and support personnel, the superintendent's contract and purchase of property.
Upon return, the board voted to continue the contract of Dr. April Grace as discussed in executive session, and also hired personnel.
