DALE—Taking care of business. That is exactly what the Dale basketball squads did, Tuesday night, sweeping the Preston Pirates and Lady Pirates. The Dale Lady Pirates smothered Preston 63-38 before the Dale Pirates held on for a 74-66 win.
The Lady Pirates got back on track, in the night’s opener, jumping on Preston early. They held an 18-9 lead after the first quarter and took a 38-21 advantage into the half. Six different Lady Pirates scored in the half.
Lindy Nowakowski scored all 12 of her points in the half.
Dale’s offense slowed down in the third quarter, only scoring seven points in the frame, but still held a comfortable lead of 45-30, heading into the fourth. They blew the game wide open thanks to Elaine Witt and Danyn Lang in the final quarter. Witt scored seven and Lang netted six in the quarter. Witt finished with 12 points, along with Nowakowski and Brenlee Sheppard. Lang finished with 10 along with Emmie Idleman.
The Class 2A top-ranked Lady Pirates improve to 11-1 on the season and will face Rock Creek, Thursday at 1:40 pm, in the first round of the Kingston Tournament.
The top-ranked Dale Pirates improved to 10-2 with Tuesday night’s win over Preston. Dale took an early lead, thanks in part, to four made treys in the opening quarter. Ike Shirey hit two of them while Palmer Jones and Gabe Gouge each added one. Dale led 24-11 after the first quarter then stretched it to 38-24 at the half.
The two squads played even in the third quarter, each scoring 21 points in the frame, with Dale’s Gouge and Preston’s Case Love taking over for each team in the paint.
Gouge scored seven, while Love hit for 11 of his 22 points in the quarter. Each player finished with a game-high 22 points.
The Preston Pirates tried to make things interesting in the final quarter, and cut the Dale lead to 63-56 on a pair of free throws by Anthony Craig.
Jones shut the door on the visitors, nailing a three-pointer at the 4:27 mark, then stole a pass on Preston’s next possession and scored the layup to get the lead back up to 68-56.
Jones finished with 17 points, while Shirey hit for 15. Trae Thompson added 10 for Dale.
Jarron Williams scored 20 for Preston while Turner Howk added 15.
Dale will play Tishomingo, Thursday at 3:00 pm, in the first round of the Kingston Tournament.
