SHAWNEE—The Macomb Hornets and Lady Hornets opened up play in the Pott. County Basketball Tournament, Monday night, and found the going tough. The Hornets dropped a 57-23 decision to the Davenport Bulldogs before the Lady Hornets were handled 49-9 by the Allen Lady Mustangs.
In the boys game, the Hornets fell behind early and never got on track. Davenport took a 13-5 lead after the first quarter then expanded it to 34-12 at the intermission. Macomb had no answer for the inside presence of Cal Harelson. Harelson scored 10 of his game-high 15 points in the opening half.
Macomb managed just two made field goals in the first half, one on a bucket by Blaine Cope and a triple by Ian Horn.
Davenport blew the game wide open in the third, outscoring the Hornets 18-6.
Horn led Macomb with nine points.
The Bulldogs had three other scorers join Harelson in double digits. Stevie Orr hit for 11 while Gabe Vail and Tres Hamlett each scored 10.
Macomb will play the loser of the Asher – Earlsboro clash to be played Tuesday. Macomb's next game will be played Friday at 4:00 pm.
The girls game saw the Allen Lady Mustangs take control early. Allen opened on a 13-0 run before Mariah Carolina hit a bucket at the 3:13 mark of the first quarter.
Carolina finished with six points for Macomb.
Allen led 31-5 at the half and had two players score in double figures. Emily Sells led all scorers with 15 while Kaylyn Rowsey netted 10.
The lady Hornets will next play the loser of today’s Earlsboro – Wetumka game. The loser’s bracket game will be tipped at 4 o’clock on Friday.
