A nationwide Point In Time count of the homeless will be conducted Thursday; Shawnee groups will be taking part in the count.
A nationwide Point In Time count of the homeless will be conducted Thursday.
The count is done every year for one day in January. “The more accurate the count the better the need is reflected at the federal level where all funding to assist the homeless comes from,” Rayneta Manwarin, Community Resource & Development Coordinator for
Central Oklahoma Community Action Agency, said.
“The funding is used to feed the homeless, shelter and rehouse the homeless among other things to assist them in becoming self-sufficient and stably housed.”
From midnight to noon Jan. 24 agencies will utilize partnering agencies and resources to gather an accurate homeless population count.
“We will also be partnering with other local agencies like Mission Shawnee who will be providing a meal that day to aid in the count,” she said.
As of press time, the following agencies had planned meals or activities Thursday for the Nationwide Point in Time count in Shawnee:
• Shawnee Senior Center, 401 N. Bell, Shawnee — Free Breakfast
• Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 501 N. Broadway, Shawnee — free sack lunch
• Mission Shawnee, 126 S. Center, Shawnee — free lunch at 11:30 a.m.
