The Shawnee Family YMCA has just been named the recipient of a $135,000 grant from the Avedis Foundation.

Avedis awarded the funds (given over a three-year period) to the local YMCA to help strengthen what it considers a vital and important organization in the community.

“The grant from the Avedis Foundation has made it possible for the Shawnee Family YMCA to remain an independent YMCA and maintain its own identity within our community,” Shawnee YMCA CEO Brandon Bell said.

The YMCA has been collaborating with local organizations such as the United Way, Family Promise, Legacy Parenting, Youth and Family Resource Center, Gateway to Prevention, Big Brothers Big Sisters and Project Safe.

Positive connections also have been made with several larger entities such as the City of Shawnee, St. Anthony Shawnee Hospital, Shawnee Milling Company and Shawnee Public Schools.

“By developing these relationships, the YMCA has been able to amplify its footprint on the community,” Avedis CEO and President Kathy Laster said.

“It is so impressive to see all the gains the Y has made in expanding its services and outreach to the community,” she said. “Brandon has been a valuable addition to the many dedicated and invested nonprofit leaders serving our community.”

She said Avedis is honored and pleased to fund a project that is making a difference in the community.

YMCA Director of HR and Finance Tara Andrews said the staff at the YMCA has helped to create a positive and upbeat culture that truly makes the Shawnee Family YMCA a wonderful place to be.
